Life story

Christa Dawn Burchett born at 10:05am weighted only 5lb 13oz a very tiny beautiful gift from God!
January 30, 1993

This is a store Chris wrote about when it was time for her baby girl to come into this world 05/06/2002;we came across it in some of her things thought we would share with you.

It was late in the evening on Jan. 30,1993 in Johnson County, KY. I was just returning from a trip into town, when I began to feel pain and pressure in my lower abdomen. I walked in and sat down on the couch to see if it would help relieve some of the pain. After a few hours of pain and pressure, I realized it must be contractions that I was feeling. I woke my husband and we began our trip to the hospital.

After arriving at the hospital in Ashland Ky it was confirmed by the doctors that I was in labor and would have a long journey ahead. The pain was beginning to become worse with each minute. I thought of how bad it felt to just lay there in the bed and not be able to do anything about the pain I was feeling. I tried walking, and sitting up in the bed, sitting on the edge of the bed, but nothing seemed to help.

My family had just begun to come in and fill the room when things began to go wrong. The nurse rushed to my side, and they begun to roll me from side to side. I didn’t understand what was going on, or why they were doing this to me. All I knew was how worse it seemed to make my pain feel. I asked them to please stop making me roll from side to side, but they instead I must keep rolling. Finally, they allowed me to stop rolling and proceeded to inform me of what was going on. They advised me that the baby had lost her heart beat, and they weren’t sure what the problem was; therefore, by having me roll from side to side, it would allow them to be able to tell if she was holding on to her umbilical cord. And sure enough, she had grabbed a hold of her cord and didn’t want to let go. After all the bouncing around it finally caused her to finally let go.

Needless to say, after 26 hours of excruciation pain, I finally delivered a beautiful, 8lb. 3oz., black hair, blue-eyed baby girl. It was a moment filled with excitation, happiness, and relief, because, it was finally all over.

I never thought that one person could possibly change my life as she has. There is never a dull moment, and she always brings a smile to my face. I love her with all my heart and could never imagine life without her. Regardless of all the pain and suffering with labor and the delivery, I would not change one thing.

Christa Dawn Burchett
Paintsville Fire-Rescue-EMS - Kentucky
Classification: Career
Rank: Assistant Fire Chief / EMS Director
Date of Death: January 22, 2008
Age: 33

Early one crisp winter morning, Christa Dawn Burchett set out to do what she has spent most of her adult life doing, saving a life. A 911 call for help, which started out like most other calls, ended very differently and changed the lives of all who knew and loved Christa.

Christa Dawn (Lemaster) Burchett was born September 2, 1974, in Columbus, Ohio, to Redford and Melinda Lemaster. She was their first child and their only daughter. Redford and Melinda watched Christa grow from a young child who was always willing to lend a hand, to a strong woman who went above and beyond daily. At the age of 18, Christa became a mother when she had her daughter, Olivia Burchett. Christa always placed Olivia and her needs first; she was a mother first and foremost. Christa took great pride in the relationships she had with her family and cherished her friends dearly.

In 2003, Christa became a paramedic, and in August 2005, she began working with the Paintsville Fire Department and EMS. Less than two years later, Christa was named assistant fire chief and director of the emergency management services and rescue services. Christa loved working with the EMS and was grateful that she could offer comfort and help to those in need.

On the morning of January 22, 2008, Christa responded to a call for help from a young mother-to-be who had lost control of her car on an icy road. She rushed to the scene in an ambulance and was helping the young woman to get into the ambulance. At the same moment, a tractor-trailer loaded with coal began sliding on the highway and hit Christa and the mother-to-be. The mother was killed on impact. Christa died at Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center in Paintsville at 10:04 a.m.

Christa’s name and legacy will live on through the lives and people she has touched. Christa left too early, and not a day goes by that her family and friends don’t think of her and miss her dearly. Christa left behind a beautiful daughter, Olivia Burchett (14), who had to grow up way too soon. Being left without a mother at such a young age has changed her life forever. Christa’s parents, Redford and Melinda, miss her more with each passing day. Her brother and sister-in-law, Redford and Jennifer, have a huge void in their lives.

Christa’s friends and coworkers have also been impacted by her absence and have promised to ensure that her dedication and devotion to caring for others will continue through them. In Memory of Unit 106, Christa Dawn Burchett.

I  spent September 2 at the grave yard to celebrate my baby girls 36th birthday...just like I do every birthday & hoilday... My daughter was killed 2 years 8 months ago in line of duty on her job. Now for me this is how ......I spend my time with my daughter! I will never hear her voice, hear her laughter, see her smile, look into her beautiful eyes, touch her cheek, wrap my arms around her to feel her against me!!!! I cant not tell you how this feels except that there is no pain that hurts your heart as deep, there is no loneliness nor longing that takes such a grip on your mind, body, heart or soul when you realize that this is the way your life will remain! To me if you cant love your children un- conditonaly then you really dont know what love is...and there is no way you really can love anyone!!! Our children did not ask to be born just like you as a parent didnt ask to be born. So hold them close, feel thier skin, listen to thier voice, thier laughter, look into thier eyes and TELL THEM YOU LOVE AND NEED THEM MORE THAN THE NEXT BREATH YOU TAKE.... BECAUSE AS A MOTHER THAT NO LONGER HAS HER DAUGHTER HERE WITH HER NEEDS HER DAUGHTER MORE THAN MY NEXT BREATH!!!
